REVIEW: How To Be An MP

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Check out this review of Paul Flynn’s How To Be an MP in the South Wales Argus (click on the image to enlarge). They say:

‘If you want to know the secrets of the Palace of Westminster Newport West MP Paul Flynn’s book is a great place to start’.

‘There are also places where the knowing writing made me laugh out’.

Now we love official book reviews, really we do. But it’s so nice when a reader enjoys a book so much that they feel compelled to contact the author to tell them just that. Paul receieved this email from a third-year politics student:

‘The reason I am emailing, is because I recently read your book How To Be An MP, and I just wanted to let you know how amazing I thought the book was! As someone who has worked within the parliamentary bubble (even for just a small amount of time), so much of your book resonated with my experience of the institution, including many of the brilliant little nuggets and stories you had!

Without meaning to sound sycophantic, I really wish to express just how funny your book was as well. It’s a rarity to find a book that will literally make you laugh out loud. But more than that, there are so many excellent ideas on how to improve and strengthen the legislature and improve the roles of MPs – especially backbenchers.

As someone who has a deep interest in legislatures (my degree was British Politics and Legislative Studies), it is always a pleasure to find literature written by legislators that is easily digestible and thought-provoking (without complicated political lingo that puts many readers off or simply confuses them). But as I say, it was not only informative, it was also very funny, whilst at the same time posed some very serious questions about how MPs might improve on their roles.

I was particularly interested in the points you made about the public perception of MPs, which I find to be a real shame, though your book offers real solutions and advice that I think many could benefit from. MPs on ‘junkets’ and holidays was also of interest.

I just felt the need to email you and tell you, simply, that your book was wonderful! And I sincerely hope you will continue to write/update of this subject.’

It just goes to show that the book isn’t just for wannabe MPs, or those who’ve already made their way to the hallowed halls of parliament. It’s a funny, interesting, thought-provoking book, for students and politicos alike.

Paul Flynn tells Mark D’Arcy how to be an MP

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Here at Biteback we like to publish books. Our authors like to write them. We all like to talk about them, especially when it’s in conjunction with the sensual tones of Mark D’Arcy, on BBC Parliament’s BOOKtalk. Is it just me or is there something a bit sensual about BOOKtalk in general?

The theme music certainly is, and if the discussion between Paul Flynn, author of How To Be An MP, and Mark is anything to go by they certainly think so as well. When Paul appeared on BOOKtalk they discussed everything from the most beautiful parliamentary intake yet – the class of 2010 – to whips, to how to, you know, be an MP.

Click here to listen to the full discussion.

How To Be An MP is an invaluable guide to what can be achieved by backbenchers, invaluable to would-be MPs and essential for constituents who want to know what their MP ought to be doing. From surviving the Speaker to walking on water; from running a campaign to doughnutting; from dealing with the tabloids to staying married, this fully updated edition of Paul Flynn’s survey of backbench life explains all in an engaging and often humorous manner.

How to use Twitter if you are connected to an MP in any way

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

by Holly Smith

As you may well know we’ve just published How To Be An MP, a witty look at how to survive life in the House of Commons, by veteran MP Paul Flynn.

Are you starting to think someone should write a sequel, called ‘How to Work for an MP’? Because although you might have thought that it goes without saying, the correct way to work for an MP probably doesn’t involve the whole of Twitter joining forces to save your job, as happened this afternoon when Tom Watson’s intern decided to “twit-rape” Mr Watson (their words, not mine).

Tom Watson’s intern isn’t the only one. Who remembers Diane Abbott’s “over enthusiastic staffer” retweeting a YouGov poll during the two minutes silence on Armistice Day? The “junior” member of staff responsible for Ed Miliband’s brilliant “Blackbusters” tweet? Whilst the horror of these errors might have been a good character-building experience, it’s probably for the best that someone shows these novices how it’s done.

We could make it a series. “How to use Twitter if you’re an MP”. “Why it isn’t a good idea to let anyone who isn’t you get hold of your social media login details, especially if you’re an MP”. “How to use Twitter if you are connected to an MP in any way”. “How to use Twitter if you’re young and once handed out a leaflet for a political party and the organisers thought ‘there’s a young person, quickly get a picture of them with a rosette so we’ll seem young too’ and therefore a Twitpic of you raising your glass at a party will result in a national headline, accompanied by the rosette picture, along the lines of ‘young Conservative/Labourite/Liberal Democrat put their hand a bit in the air and is probably a Nazi and why are young people drinking anyway?’”.

Until that day comes do the right thing and buy Paul Flynn’s How To Be an MP.

Getting your arm around the Speaker’s wife

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Grant Tucker worked his highly embarrassing magic again at the launch party for How to be an MP held in the Speaker’s House in Parliament on Tuesday. Upon seeing Sally Bercow…

“Quick! Katy, Sally looks like she’s trying to leave, let’s get a picture of you with her!”
“What? Why can’t you get in a picture with her?”
“I’VE already got one.”
“Of cour…”
“SALLY! Can Katy have a picture with you?”

This is the result. Sally looks lovely, I look vertically challenged and a BIT red from all the accosting. Still, it’s nice to have a new addition to my fast expanding repertoire of impromptu photographs with Westminster Village slebs. Hat tip Tucker G.

Dedicated to the memory of the late David Taylor MP, How to be an MP is the fully updated version of Paul Flynn’s book Learning the Commons Knowledge. The book Professor Philip Cowley called ‘the single best thing ever written about being an MP, full of humour, insights and wisdom.’

It’s available to order now, priced £12.99.
