When reading the news this morning I stumbled across this intriguing article about a rather impressive young man and thought I’d share.

Not every twelve year old boy who would turn up for a day at school wearing a skirt, but that’s exactly what Chris Whitehead from Impington Village near Cambridge did.

Chris wore the knee length skirt in protest of his school’s supposed discrimination. Two years ago parents and teachers of the school decided between them that they would instigate a ban on boys wearing shorts. This new uniform policy was apparently often a contentious subject as the summer months approached and was something that particularly upset Chris when he joined the school. He is quoted as saying that the fact that girls were permitted to wear skirts for school but boys were not allowed to wear shorts “discriminates against boys” and that being forced to wear trousers on hot days affects concentration at school.

Due to a loop hole in the rules, there was nothing written in the uniform policy stating that boys should not wear skirts to school. So, this brave twelve year old boy decided that he would take a stand and decided to march to school in a skirt, along with half a dozen other pupils waving banners. He then stood up in front of an assembly of 1,368 fellow pupils to address them on the matter.

Chris is an aspiring politician and is clearly already demonstrating a desire for change and a confidence in his beliefs. The general consensus in the Biteback office is that Chris Whitehead is a bit of a legend! I wish I had had the same courage of my convictions when I was twelve years old. Actually, I wish I did now!
