9781849543118.jpgWe’re used to seeing high profile celebrations of religious festivals. With hundreds of religions worldwide, including those familiar to us, such as Christianity and Islam, as well as Jediism and the, um, Prince Philip movement, there’s no shortage.

But did you know that there’s also a National Secular Society? According to their website:

The National Secular Society is Britain's only organisation working exclusively towards a secular society. Founded in 1866, we campaign from a non-religious perspective for the separation of religion and state and promote secularism as the best means to create a society in which people of all religions or none can live together fairly and cohesively. The NSS sees secularism - the position that the state should be separate from religion - as an essential element in promoting equality between all citizens.

They’re holding their conference on 22nd September, featuring famous atheist Richard Dawkins as keynote speaker. Richard also happens to be a fan of Alom Shaha’s The Young Atheist’s Handbook. He tweeted:

@RichardDawkins The Young Atheist's Handbook by Alom Shaha, published 19th July. How a young physics teacher escaped Islam. I've met him and was impressed.

The book has had fantastic reviews…

‘he is gentle and persuasive – the type of teacher you would have loved to have had educate you’ – Nick Cohen, The Guardian

‘Charismatically discusses everything…he writes sensitively and reasonably’ – Tania Ahsan, Metro

…and I would thoroughly recommend that you get your copy now. Especially as it’s currently on special offer for £11.50. Ahem.
