Yesterday, in a marathon editorial meeting Big Cheese introduced - in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek manner - the institution of the employee of the month.
There we each sat. Quietly. Awaiting his praise like mediocre actors at the Oscars, with a half-smile of anticipation and unwarranted self-belief. Calm on the outside but screaming inside 'pick me! pick me!' like slightly overweight children trying out for the rounders squad. You get the point. I wanted to be employee of the month.
That's not to say I deserved it over my other dejected colleagues. No no. But I wanted it. And now all that fills the void created by a lost sense of 'we're all in this together', is jealousy. Rampant jealously. Just look Big Cheese. Look at this picture, at this man you've chosen. See how he plays all day on his Mac distorting pictures of his face? You choose THIS man?! (To get a picture of Nam-designer-man on this blog, I had to get in the photo. Not my fault. Creative license.)
Only this morning he demonstrated his alphabetical ineptitude. He sent Hollie an email asking her what letter comes after 'r' expecting her to say 'tea!'. Fortunately for us, our Assistant Editor knows that the answer to that question is in fact 's'...
What have I learned since yesterday? The bossmen have put their 'divide and conquer' plan into action. I must adapt to my new environment, I must practice my ABCs and I must write more borderline denigratory blog posts about my cohorts. Even if they are truly brilliant designers. Check out some of Nam's latest covers...
