So it's Thursday. Or is it Friday? I'm just going to be a bit radical and say it's FRURSDAY. Woo and also a hoo for bank holidays.
And in the spirit of Frursday, I've done a special round up of the week for you...
1. Espionage Week
It was espionage week on the Biteback Blog, and the fascinating story of how the Double Cross system helped Britain to win World War 2 was told by a mystery contributor. We heard the story of Snow: the first of the great double agents; how Dilly broke the German Secret Service Enigma Cipher; Garbo: the most important of the double agents; and finally, but most importantly, the story of how Garbo saved D-Day. It seems that everyone was getting involved; Snow in April was trending on twitter, and Google decided to pull out their own double cross...
2. That'll do, pig
Diet guru John Nicholson, author of The Meat Fix: How A Lifetime Of Healthy Eating Nearly Killed Me, has had enough of the conventional wisdom on healthy eating. Are you a dissolute porker? Then you're just not trying hard enough. You should trust John; after all, he's not a doctor...
3. Memories of the Falklands
The 30th anniversary of the beginning of the Falklands War was marked on Monday. In Staffordshire, at Britain's National Memorial Arboretum, veterans, and relatives of those who died, gathered as a single candle was lit. The memories and recollections of those involved in the conflict are collected in Memories of the Falklands, edited by Iain Dale, and include contributions from political and diplomatic figures, such as Margaret Thatcher, men on the front line, journalists, and many of the islanders themselves.
4. 1984 was meant to be a warning, not a manual
In the most read piece on the Biteback Blog this week, Alex Deane, editor of Big Brother Watch, took issue with the government's plans to increase digital surveillance: 'This kind of monitoring might well reduce crime – but so would a curfew, or banning alcohol. We have to find a balance – and this policy is an unprecedented acquisition of power by the state out of all proportion to the threat it allegedly seeks to solve'.
2. An alternative Queen's Speech
Robert Philpot, editor of The Purple Book, has been calling for a shadow Queen's speech. Throughout April, Progress Online will be giving figures from across the Labour Party, and the country, the chance to put forward their ideas for what a shadow Queen’s speech could contain. You can read the first in the series to hear former home secretary, Jacqui Smith, call for ‘fiscal responsibility first’.
6. Boris vs. Ken
And in my own PERSONAL achievement of the week, here's a very Biteback/Robson Press take on the Boris vs. Ken lift row. 22 book titles? Oh yeah. That takes some skills...
HAVE A WONDERFUL EASTER.
