Square 109 original David Rathband was a police constable with Northumbria Police Force. Born in Stafford in 1968, he joined Northumbria Police as a Police Constable in 2000 and spent six years as a 24/7 response officer. In 2006 he joined the Traffic Department and in July 2010 he was shot and blinded by Raoul Moat whilst on patrol. As he was recuperating from his injuries he had the idea of founding a charity to help other emergency servicemen and women injured in the line of duty – this became the Blue Lamp Foundation. Tragically, he took his own life on 29 February 2012.
