Armed with relentless determination and biting wit, anti-apartheid legend Helen Suzman fought the white male establishment to form a groundbreaking human rights campaign. Robin Renwick, former British Ambassador to South Africa discusses Helen Suzman’s extraordinary life and achievements with her daughter, art historian Frances Suzman Jowell and niece, actress and director Janet Suzman, facilitated by Rebecca Taylor, editor of Jewish Renaissance.

Lord (Robin) Renwick is a crossbench peer in the House of Lords. During a long and illustrious career in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, he has been Ambassador to both South Africa and the US.

Lady Jowell is an art historian. An authority on 19th century French art and art criticism and on the interpretation of 17th century Dutch art, she has published on Thoré-Bürger (the French political journalist and art critic who rediscovered Vermeer), on Impressionism, and on the French artist Géricault, among other topics.

Dame Janet Suzman was born in South Africa, and is formerly a member of the RSC. She twice won The Evening Standard Best Actress Award and is a patron of the Market Theatre, Johannesburg where she directed her celebrated Othello.

Rebecca Taylor is the editor of Jewish Renaissance magazine. She started her a career as a journalist on the news desk at The Japan Times, returning to London to work first for The Guardian, and then as News Editor at Time Out.
