Since the 2015 general election delivered an unexpected outright majority to the Conservative party and a landslide victory for the SNP in Scotland, the landscape of British politics has been radically altered. A divisive referendum on the EU further exposed faultlines between a disillusioned electorate and a metropolitan elite. As the Labour Party fights a second leadership contest, many doubt the opposition’s ability to challenge the Tory government in the next general election.

But as the old politics crumbles, some politicians on the left see an opportunity for a new progressive alliance. Can the parties on the progressive left - including Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens - find a way to work together on issues such as the environment, immigration and welfare? Is it possible to create a new, more representative, pluralist politics on the left, and is this the only way to defeat the Tories in the next election?

Join the debate chaired by the Guardian’s John Harris with Labour MP for Wigan Lisa Nandy and Green MP for Brighton Pavilion Caroline Lucas, with more speakers to be announced.

Copies of the book, The Alternative: Towards a New Progressive Politics, will be available to purchase on the evening of the event.
